800-829 A.D. - German Emperor Charlemagne

Did you know the Franks were a Germanic people?

Historically, they occupied central Europe and Scandinavia, and by the 800's these Germanic tribes became the Germanic Dynasties who ruled the western part of the collapsed Roman Empire. These dynasties began both the Holy Roman Empire, as well as the kingdoms of West Francia (modern-day France) and East Francia (modern-day Germany). Wild right? But it was Charlemagne who started the whole thing. And the year 800 kicks it off.

Leo Crowns Charlemagne

December 25, The Frankish (Germanic) king Charlemagne is crowned emperor by Pope Leo III in Rome...

...and so begins the Carolingian Empire; the first phase of the Holy Roman (German) Empire and France

The Carolingian Empire is the beginning, or the first phase, of the Holy Roman Empire (German Empire) as well as France ("Franks" or "Frankish" means a Germanic group of people; Franks were first mentioned in the 3rd century by Roman sources, and were associated with tribes who lived between the Lower Rhine and Ems River); The crowning of Charlemagne is part of Pope Leo III's efforts to transfer power from east to west--and he didn't just crown him, he anointed him with holy oil, a western innovation to the ritual; Anointing is reserved for bishops and high-ranking clergy, so by anointing the emperor with holy oil...

...Leo is claiming a "vital and superior role for the Church, which popes of Rome, metropolitans of Russia and archbishops of Canterbury became anxious to perpetuate."

(Byzantium, Pg. 31)
